Diesel Generator in my Electric Car

by Jon
(Gig harbor, Wa.)

Is it possible to install a diesel generator to power an electric motor?

If so, what would you recommend to power a fiberglass type car with Volkswagen frame?

Hi, Jon -
Yes, you can install a diesel generator to charge your batteries as you go (Just make sure you vent it properly). The Chevy Volt does this, basically - except it's flexfuel instead of diesel, but that's a minor distinction; )

5kw should be plenty for your light car.

Check out the article on the bottom right under "Recommended Reading" to see how someone else put a portable generator in their electric car and built a plug-in series hybrid...ten years ago. It's still working just fine, last time I talked to him.

Regards,
Lynne
