EV Cost Effects: Lithium Batteries or AC Drive System?

by John
(Atlanta ,GA)

Lithium batteries are a lot lighter than lead so why are people not using them instead of lead? - well, besides price.

I work with a lot of German parts cars and wanted to put together an electric car but need 80+ miles in range to be able to drive to work. Before I start building I have to make sure I can have the power source to manage that first.

Hi, John -
I believe the better "bang for your buck" would be to take the money you were going to invest in lithium batteries, and invest it in an AC drive system instead. It will cost the same or less, and you're more likely to get the range you were looking for - even with 12v lead-acid batteries.

Lynne
