1979 F150 conversion

I'm also looking to do a conversion on an F150, though a 1979 manual transmission. I'm having a hard time finding an efficient enough motor to make it worth the while to be able to haul and get decent milage. Ideally a brushless motor. From what I'm finding it seems like the best option would be to build a custom motor from scratch. It is 2 wheel drive, which drops a little weight. Also, of course no motor and manual transmissions are lighter. I suppose there is the possibility of adding a gas generator to kick in when batteries get low for extended mileage. Kind of just waiting until a new battery technology comes available. Seems like Tesla is on the right track. Any leads or suggestions are appreciated.
