Is the DC conversion cheaper than AC?

Yes, at the moment, because the AC controller is complex and expensive...but it allows the motor to use battery power more efficiently.


Update 2011: Not anymore. Check out the HPEVS AC-50, an AC motor and controller combination which costs about $4500.
