Lithium Ion Batteries for Electric Cars

by Drew

Why aren't lithium ion batteries being used in electric cars instead of lead-acid?

Hi, Drew -
Several reasons.

First, Li-ion batteries are more expensive than lead acid. That's easy. If it costs 10x as much, fewer people are going to buy them.

Second, Li-ion batteries are not as safe as lead acid. You've seen the flaming laptop footage, no doubt, and already know that lithium doesn't appreciate being insulted (by things like impact, puncture, high temperatures, or charging errors) and tends to retaliate by bursting into fireworks. Further, once one lithium cell goes up, it tends to bring all the rest of them along with it in a chain reaction known as "thermal runaway".
The safer lithium chemistries and configurations like lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) are already in use in electric cars, although still more expensive than lead acid.

Third, the supply of lithium EV batteries has been spotty at best. This is beginning to change. You can find good EV lithium battery suppliers here in the US that guarantee their batteries and will replace them if you get a bad cell.

Good question, Drew!

Regards,
Lynne
