Razor Pocket Mod Electric Scooter...Eventually

birthday scooter

Trina, one of my husband's students, just last week got a Razor Pocket Mod electric scooter named "Bella" (that's the hot pink one; ) for her birthday.

Sadly, her birthday was two months ago! (More on that in a minute.)

The first time they bought Trina's new scooter, in plenty of time for her birthday, they got it on an Ebay store for about 50 bucks less than the one she's got now. But when it arrived, they charged it up (or tried to!) and only got 15 minutes of runtime out of it! Talk about a disappointment. They charged it up again, thinking it was just bad luck...and by this time it was almost Trina's birthday and it STILL wouldn't hold a charge.

They called the Ebay store's toll-free number, and the (very apologetic) customer service representative offered to send them another battery to replace the bad one. Trouble was...

...the new battery wasn't much better!

The bad news was that Trina still didn't have her Razor pocket mod! After talking it over with Dad, they decided to get Trina's pocket mod from a real electric transportation dealer online (click here to visit the store they went with) instead of a big box store or toy outlet.

"These batteries have a shelf life," my friend Kelly at the electric transportation store explained. "As soon as we get a shipment of electric scooters into the warehouse, we immediately pull the batteries, put them in a cool spot, and place them on a trickle charger which preserves their freshness. And then if for some reason we keep a battery around here until it starts to show some age, we don't keep 'em. We'd just recycle it rather than letting it go out to a customer.

big warehouse store "The toy stores or warehouse stores, they don't have the expertise or inclination to take care of their batteries this way, so their only hope is to get rid of 'em as quickly as possible.

If you're thinking of buying an electric scooter from one of them, here's my advice: Check the manufacturing date on the battery. If it's a year old, don't buy it. That battery's been sitting around a hot warehouse AGING prematurely, and by the time you get it, half its life is OVER already."
