Has anyone used a snowmobile drive system to hold down the load placed on the EV's motor during acceleration? Or would the friction be too much? I am talking about a EV at less than 1000lbs.

Hi, Ed -
What an interesting question! And as a matter of fact, yes. Check out this bike on the EV Photo Album.
Here's what they say about it:
"It gives the bike excellent low speed torque, yet allows for a good top speed. Combination of CVT and secondary gear reduction gives the bike a 9:1 gearing at low speed up to a 3:1 gearing at high speed."

Regards,
Lynne
