Used Golf Cart for Sale?

You wouldn't know where I might find a used golf cart for sale, would you? emailed a nice lady named Joan from Key Largo last week.

Very nice website, by the way, she wrote. The pictures aren't too big, so I can see you on my webtv without having to wait all day for the pages to come up.

I see you've got some pictures of those nice golf carts there, but I can't afford those. Do you know of a used golf cart for sale around Southern Florida? I don't golf, and wouldn't know where to even begin to look, or what to look for.

Why do you want a golf cart if you don't golf? I asked.

Oh, to get around town, she said. I don't see why I should start up my Le Sabre just to go three blocks to the library. I could walk, but I've got a bad knee and can't go too far.

What I need is one of those nice little cars you've got on your website, one of the red ones...

...but I only want to spend three thousand dollars.

I do have a friend with an Ebay store selling golf carts and I remembered he had some used golf carts once in a while, so I called him up to talk about it.

Oh yes, he said. Chances are good that, within her budget, she'll be able to find a used golf cart for sale that would work just fine to get her back and forth to the library, the grocery store, church, the local tavern, or anywhere else she might want to go in Key Largo.

What about out to the state park? I asked. I went out on the glass-bottomed boat to see the coral reef from there a couple of years ago.

How far is that? he asked.

Five miles or something. I don't remember.

I don't see why not, he replied. Just remind her to stay off the freeway.

Couple things to remember though, Lynne, he said.

First, buy it local if you can (and in Southern Florida, that shouldn't be too much of a problem!). Keep in mind that if you decide to buy a used golf cart for sale on Ebay, you gotta get it home. If you can't find a used golf cart for sale locally, then remember to add shipping costs to the total, which will be anywhere from $500 to $1000 over the cost of the bid.

The other place to try besides Ebay is Craigslist. Just choose your city and go from there; )

Next, be prepared to replace the batteries. Generally speaking, it takes 8 six-volt deep-cycle batteries (Trojan makes the good ones) to run a golf cart. Some have more voltage, some less...

...but this is the standard number.

You can bet that any used golf cart for sale has been sitting around a while unwanted, letting the batteries sit and drain, which ages them prematurely. Don't count on them holding a full charge anymore.

What does it take to be street-legal?

To register it as a NEV, a neighborhood electric vehicle, your golf cart is required to have windshield, seatbelts, headlights and brake-lights, horn, turn-signals, and that sort of thing. There's a list; ) And then you get Department of Motor Vehicles paperwork to fill out, and a registration number is issued...

...and voila, you're legal to drive on roads that are posted at 35mph or less.
